Alpha-lipoic acid is an important sulphur-containing fatty acid which, as an intermediate product in the body's choline metabolism, is both water- and fat-soluble. Alpha lipoic acid can be produced by the body itself and can be ingested through food. However, one of the special features of alpha-lipoic acid is that it can cross the blood-brain barrier between the bloodstream and the central nervous system. It can penetrate intra- and extracellular structures and is converted to dihydrolipoic acid.
