Alpha lipoic acid is available in two forms: as R (+) alpha lipoic acid, the body's natural form form, or as S (-) alpha lipoic acid, the synthetic isomer. Our product R (+) Alpha-Lipoic Acid 200 mg contains only the pure, endogenous form.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid has two important functions in the human body: Firstly, it is a coenzyme the enzyme complexes - including the pyruvate dehydrogenase and the alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex - necessary for cellular energy production. On the other hand, alpha lipoic acid acts as a free radical scavenger.
Alpha lipoic acid is an important sulfur-containing fatty acid that is both water and fat soluble as an intermediate product in the body's choline metabolism. Alpha lipoic acid can be produced by the body itself and absorbed through food. However, one of the special features of alpha lipoic acid is that it can pass through the blood-brain barrier between the bloodstream and the central nervous system. It can penetrate into intra- and extracellular structures and is converted into dihydrolipoic acid.
